Nasdaq Plunges 5.5% on Inflation Shock as Wintermute Draws a $82.5K Line: Bitcoin Is the Safe Haven, Altcoin Liquidity Dries Up

The largest crypto market maker Wintermute has drawn a "red line" of $82,500 for Bitcoin. According to its latest weekly report, the current price compression is unlikely to persist: with the Federal Reserve meeting, the U.S. midterm elections, and earnings season arriving one after another, analysts stated bluntly, "we do not think the range will survive these events."

The market is preparing for an inevitable volatility breakout, which should end this autumn's long period of calm.

The catalyst that triggered market anxiety was the acceleration of U.S. inflation to 3.7%. The core index rose 0.3% month-on-month, confirming that rising energy prices have begun to pass through to core inflation, and triggering a 5.52% plunge in the Nasdaq technology index. Defensive capital flowed into Brent crude oil (up 5.00%) and U.S. Treasuries (up 2.65%), and the returning macro correlation immediately unsettled digital assets.

Against this backdrop, Bitcoin fell 1.99%, squeezed into a channel around $82,500, where the former resistance level has become a key line of defense. In the past week alone, bulls have withstood a local breakdown to $80,400 triggered by $679 million in net outflows from spot ETFs, holding their ground.

Wintermute emphasized: "Bitcoin is leading the Nasdaq by 3.5 percentage points, showing it is performing better than the macro trend would suggest," and Bitcoin is now acting as the primary defensive asset. A breakout above $87,000 would open the path to new highs, while a complete loss of the $82,500 threshold would send prices back to test lows in the low $70,000s.

Just as leading Bitcoin maintains its balance on the edge, the altcoin market has erupted into a liquidity crisis: the sector fell 5.69% in a week. Wintermute's trading desk noted that "excluding a handful of high-quality large-cap altcoins, flows in altcoins are becoming one-way," while cheap capital is being withdrawn and concentrated into Bitcoin and Ethereum, the latter of which fell 7.0% in a week.

The market consensus is clear: "Bitcoin must move higher first before altcoins can restart any broad rally," so for now one should not expect alternative tokens, including XRP, to stage independent moves.

Analysts said: "The risk-reward ratio of current large-cap mainstream coins is more attractive than that of altcoins," because the correlation charts of the top 50, top 100, and top 250 assets have once again climbed in sync to peak levels, confirming that the market is losing its individuality and preparing to move in lockstep.

The market maker listed Wednesday's FOMC meeting as the key node for breaking the long range, and pointed out: "The October 28 FOMC is most likely to be the breakout point, and the impact is two-way." Hawkish rhetoric from the Federal Reserve will drag the Nasdaq lower and push Bitcoin down, while a dovish tone from the central bank combined with strong corporate earnings will give bulls the fuel to attack psychological highs.
