What Is TREAT? Shiba Inu Ecosystem Roles and Boundaries

TREAT is the ticker of an ERC-20 token issued inside the Shiba Inu ecosystem on Ethereum mainnet, and the same five letters are also the currency symbol of the Shib Alpha Layer test network; unrelated projects list tokens under the same ticker, so only a contract address identifies it. This article covers what the Ethereum contract actually is, what the official documentation says TREAT does, how thin its market is, and what remains unfinished after the September 2025 Shibarium bridge exploit.

What Is Shiba Inu TREAT

Shiba Inu Treat, ticker TREAT, is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum mainnet. Its contract address is 0xa02c49da76a085e4e1ee60a6b920ddbc8db599f4, and the verified source published there is a short OpenZeppelin contract called Treat that inherits ERC20 and ERC20Burnable. The entire supply is minted once in the constructor from a deployment argument of 10,000,000,000, which is a fixed cap of 10 billion tokens with 18 decimals, and the verification record on that address is dated 29 December 2024. Trading opened on exchanges on 14 January 2025, with withdrawals following on 15 January 2025.

The same ticker carries a second, separate meaning inside the project. Shiba Inu's developer documentation lists the network as Shib Alpha Layer Testnet with chain ID 122018 and a currency symbol of TREAT, and the faucet page describes handing out free $TREAT as "the native tokens of the Shib Alpha Layer". Faucet units on a test network and an ERC-20 traded on Ethereum are different things that share a symbol, and both roles are official.

The issuer side is a foundation and a set of pseudonymous accounts rather than a named company. The shib.io footer carries a 2026 notice for the Shib Doggy DAO Foundation and links out to pseudonymous social accounts as the project's voices. TREAT is presented as one of four ecosystem tokens alongside SHIB, BONE and LEASH, each with its own documented purpose.

What Problem TREAT Tries to Solve

Before TREAT existed, the ecosystem's on-chain functions were carried by tokens that already had other jobs. SHIB is described as the foundation token, BONE is the gas and primary governance token of the Shibarium network, and LEASH is a limited-supply token, so every new reward programme or vote had to borrow weight from an asset already committed elsewhere. Loading rewards, utility and governance onto assets that also secure a chain mixes questions that fail differently.

The project's answer is a fourth token with its own scope. In the description its team supplies to listing pages, Treat is called the final token in the Shiba Inu ecosystem, meant to give transactional rewards and access to the technologies it groups under a "Shib Network State", and the documentation gives it a rewards-and-utility DAO of its own. That is the issuer's stated intent, not a description of shipped and independently measurable functions, and the sections below keep the two apart.

How TREAT Works on Ethereum and Shib Alpha Layer

At the Ethereum layer the mechanism is deliberately small. The published source has no owner, no pause switch, no blacklist and no mint function reachable after deployment, so the issuer cannot increase supply or freeze transfers, and the only supply-side action available is that any holder may burn their own balance through the ERC20Burnable functions. A short contract means a small attack surface, and it also means the token contract does nothing beyond accounting.

The Shib Alpha Layer role sits on a different stack. The documentation describes Alpha Layer as a decentralised shared sequencer and interoperability protocol built on Cosmos SDK and CometBFT and powered by a protocol called Elder, offering a single account and a single gas token across the rollups that connect to it. That page carries its own banner: the documentation covers the Shib Alpha Layer testnet, and it refers readers to mainnet documentation "when available".

The place where TREAT is used on-chain today is Shibarium, not Ethereum. The staking product, Bury 2.0, lists Shibarium with chain ID 109 as its supported network, so locking TREAT happens there rather than on the chain where the ERC-20 lives. Governance runs on the same layer, because the documentation says the Doggy DAOs operate on Shibarium so that voting is gasless.

What TREAT Does in the Shiba Inu System

Governance is the clearest documented role. TREAT DAO is one of four official Doggy DAOs and is scoped to rewards distribution, utility features, community funding and incentive programmes, and it supports four voting strategies: plain ERC-20 token weight, vote-escrowed veTREAT, one-identity-one-vote, and quadratic voting. Its published process for standard proposals is a five-day community review followed by a three-day voting period.

Staking exists but currently pays nothing. Bury 2.0 lets a holder lock TREAT for between one week and four years in exchange for veTREAT on a linear scale, where a four-year lock gives full weight, two years gives half and one year gives a quarter, with voting power decaying to zero as the lock expires and being recalculated every Thursday. The documentation states in its own words that Bury 2.0 does not offer staking rewards and that staking is for voting power only, that it is in beta, and that early withdrawal costs a 30 percent penalty.

On supply the honest answer is that no dedicated document exists. TREAT is not the gas token of Ethereum or of Shibarium, no protocol burn or buyback is described anywhere in the documentation, and the documentation frames it as a rewards and utility token whose DAO is scoped to rewards distribution and utility features. There is no published TREAT tokenomics paper setting out allocation, unlocks or emissions, so any distribution figure you meet needs its own source and its own date before you repeat it.

The Shiba Inu TREAT Ecosystem and Adoption Today

Adoption is best measured by how thin the market is. On 14 August 2026 CoinGecko stated that it calculates the TREAT price by aggregating six exchanges and six markets, and the venues it listed were four centralised pairs on MEXC, KCEX, CoinW and Gate plus two decentralised pairs on ShibaSwap and Uniswap V3, both on Ethereum. Reported 24-hour volume on that page was 119,407 US dollars in the statistics panel, the books were shallow enough that the largest venue showed roughly 486 US dollars of depth two percent above the quote, and the Uniswap pair was flagged as inactive with no trades in the previous three hours.

That same page does not agree with itself about supply. Its statistics panel put estimated circulating supply at 5,379,562,890 TREAT, while the plain-language section further down the page said about 2.2 billion tokens are tradable, and the valuations printed next to each figure differ accordingly. Because of that, this article takes total supply from the contract rather than from the aggregator, and it does not reuse that page's supply numbers at all.

The on-chain footprint is small and easy to check. A Blockscout token page for the contract recorded 4,413 holders on 14 August 2026 and reports the same total of 10 billion units that the constructor argument implies. Within the official documentation TREAT appears in exactly three functions, as a Doggy DAO, as a stakeable token in Bury 2.0 and as the Alpha Layer testnet currency symbol, and the documentation publishes no list of third-party applications that accept it.

How TREAT Differs from the Other Shiba Inu Tokens

The clearest difference from its siblings is that TREAT pays for nothing. BONE is the native and gas token of Shibarium and the token of the primary governance DAO, which sets a threshold of 10,000 BONE to submit a proposal, whereas TREAT has no gas role on Ethereum or on Shibarium and its DAO is scoped to rewards and utility rather than protocol upgrades. SHIB is described as the foundation token and LEASH as a limited-supply premium token, so the four differ by scope of decision, not by performance.

The second difference is identity, and it is a practical one. TREAT is the only one of the four whose symbol is also used as the currency symbol of a test network in the project's own documentation, and it shares its five-letter ticker with unrelated listings elsewhere; aggregators file this one under the identifier shiba-inu-treat rather than treat for exactly that reason. Same-ticker tokens exist, so the contract address, not the symbol, is what identifies this asset.

Risks and Limitations

The largest event in this token's environment was an attack on the bridge, not on the token. On 12 September 2025 an attacker submitted three fake checkpoints to Shibarium's Ethereum mainnet contracts, breaking continuity between the network's local state and the on-chain ledger and causing it to halt by design, while a short-lived delegation of 4.6 million BONE was used to cross validator thresholds. The project's community update of 17 September 2025 put the amount drained at about 4.1 million US dollars in ETH, SHIB and fifteen other tokens; The Block's report on the day of the attack itself described about 2.4 million US dollars drained, so the two published figures differ and both are on the record.

The response is documented in detail, and the repayment is not finished. The official post-mortem of 2 October 2025 states that all validator signer keys were rotated, that ownership of more than 100 critical contracts was migrated to hardware custody, that blacklisting was added to the staking paths, that the withdrawal delay was raised to roughly 30 checkpoints, and that 4.6 million BONE was recovered; the same post lists a plan to make users whole as near-future work. That plan is now the SOU system, in which each affected user holds an Ethereum NFT recording an original principal and a current principal that only decreases as payouts and donations arrive, which is by construction an ongoing process. As of 14 August 2026 there is no official statement that affected users have been repaid in full.

Three structural conditions apply here and should be read together. It is early in the sense that matters: the Alpha Layer documentation covers a testnet and points to mainnet documentation "when available", Bury 2.0 is described by its own docs as beta with rewards not yet released, and the metaverse product is in early access. The team is pseudonymous: the ecosystem's lead is known only as Shytoshi Kusama, the founder who used the name Ryoshi left in 2022 without disclosing an identity, and the official site links pseudonymous accounts rather than a named roster. And no published audit covering this ERC-20 contract could be found: the reviews by Hexens that the project cites are scoped to the post-incident Shibarium hardening and to the SOU system, not to the TREAT token contract.

The remaining risks are ordinary, but they bite harder at this size. Six markets and a five-figure daily volume mean that any position of consequence moves the book against itself, that a single venue delisting removes a large share of the tradable liquidity, and that quotes are set by very few trades. Rules for tokens marketed with rewards and governance language differ by jurisdiction, and this article makes no claim about how TREAT is classified anywhere. Finally, the same-ticker problem is a live loss vector, because buying or bridging the wrong TREAT is an ordinary mistake with no recourse.

How to Verify Shiba Inu TREAT

Start from the project's own domain rather than a search result. Type shib.io and docs.shib.io into the address bar yourself and use those pages as the origin for every other link, including social accounts, because only the direction from the official domain outward is evidence. Compare any domain you land on character by character, and stop if a page you reached from an advertisement, a reply or a direct message asks you to connect a wallet in order to claim, migrate or verify anything.

Then pin the contract, because the ticker will not do it. On Ethereum mainnet TREAT is 0xa02c49da76a085e4e1ee60a6b920ddbc8db599f4 with 18 decimals; paste that contract address into a block explorer for Ethereum specifically and confirm the token name Shiba Inu Treat, the symbol TREAT, that the source code is verified, the deployment age and the holder count. A matching symbol on another network or in another listing is not the same asset, and aggregators keep separate entries for unrelated tokens using these five letters.

Read supply and staking terms at the source. Take total supply from the contract on a block explorer rather than from a price aggregator, because on the day this article was written one aggregator page carried two different circulating-supply figures for this token in two places. For staking, open the Bury 2.0 documentation and check for yourself whether rewards are live, what the lock range is and what early withdrawal costs, and for Shib Alpha Layer check whether the page in front of you still says testnet.

Finally, grade the security and repayment claims yourself. Look for any audit report on the auditing firm's own site and check what it covers, because a review of a bridge remediation or of a claims system does not audit a token contract. Re-read the incident post-mortems on the project's blog and the SOU documentation on the day you act, and treat a repayment programme as unfinished until an official page says otherwise.

Conclusion

TREAT is an ERC-20 on Ethereum mainnet issued inside the Shiba Inu ecosystem and fixed at 10 billion units at deployment, and the same symbol is also the currency of the Shib Alpha Layer testnet in the project's own documentation.
