Because Danaher's common stock is listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker DHR, any brokerage account with access to US shares can buy it. The company behind the ticker has been reshaped more than once: it separated Fortive in 2016, Envista in 2019 and Veralto in 2023, then bought the patient-monitoring company Masimo in June 2026. What remains is a life sciences and diagnostics group whose 2025 sales were about 82% recurring, and this guide covers its three segments, the purchase steps and what its own filings say moves the shares.
What Does Danaher Do?
Danaher owns businesses that sell instruments, consumables, software and services to drug developers, research labs and hospitals. Its annual report calls it "a global science and technology innovator committed to accelerating the power of science and technology to improve human health," made up of more than 15 operating companies. Those companies sell under their own brands, such as Cytiva, Pall, Beckman Coulter, Cepheid, Sciex and Abcam.
The legal entity began in 1969 as DMG, Inc., a Massachusetts real estate investment trust, took the name Danaher in 1984 and reincorporated in Delaware after its 1986 annual meeting. The 10-K dates the idea behind today's company to the early 1980s and its founders, Steven M. and Mitchell P. Rales, who now chair the board and its executive committee.
The business reports three segments. Biotechnology sells what drugmakers need to develop and manufacture biological medicines, from monoclonal antibodies and vaccines to cell, gene and mRNA therapies; it was built on Pall, acquired in 2015, and Cytiva, the former Biopharma business of General Electric's life sciences division, acquired on 31 March 2020. Life Sciences supplies research tools such as flow cytometers, mass spectrometers and microscopes, plus antibodies, custom DNA and RNA, and industrial filtration. Diagnostics sells instruments and tests to hospitals and laboratories, from molecular tests for infections and respiratory disease to clinical lab analysers, blood-gas testing and pathology.
The portfolio has shrunk on purpose as often as it has grown. Fortive, distributed to shareholders on 2 July 2016, took the Test & Measurement segment, Industrial Technologies except product identification, and the retail and consumer petroleum businesses. Envista, the former dental segment, floated 19.4% of its shares on 20 September 2019, and on 18 December 2019 Danaher swapped the remaining 80.6% for its own shares. On 30 September 2023 the Environmental & Applied Solutions businesses left as Veralto, one Veralto share for every three Danaher shares.
Acquisitions run the other way. On 10 June 2026 Danaher completed its purchase of Masimo, a provider of "pulse oximetry and other patient monitoring systems, primarily in acute care settings," and placed it in Diagnostics. The board also appointed Julie Sawyer Montgomery, a former head of the Beckman Coulter Diagnostics subsidiary, as President and Chief Executive Officer effective 1 October 2026, succeeding Rainer M. Blair.
How Danaher Earns Its Revenue
Total sales rose 3.0% in 2025. Core sales, a non-GAAP measure that leaves out acquired businesses and currency effects, grew 2.0%, with price increases contributing 0.5%. The three segments differ sharply:
| Segment | Share of 2025 sales | Recurring part of segment sales | Sales change, 2025 vs 2024 | Brands named in the 10-K |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Biotechnology | 29.7% | 88.1% | +8.0% | Cytiva, Pall |
| Life Sciences | 29.9% | 66.0% | Flat | Abcam, IDT, Leica Microsystems, Sciex |
| Diagnostics | 40.5% | 89.1% | +1.5% | Beckman Coulter, Cepheid, Radiometer |
Columns two and three are computed from the 10-K revenue note.
The recurring column is the core of the model: consumables, services and operating-type leases count as recurring, equipment as nonrecurring. According to the 10-K, consumables used with its equipment are "typically critical to the use of the equipment" and need "frequent replacement in the customer's operating cycle": reagents for diagnostic tests, chromatography resins for bioprocessing, filters for purification. That is why about 82% of 2025 sales were recurring, and why Life Sciences, which sells more instruments outright, has the lowest recurring share.
By customer location, in 2025 North America took 42.2% of sales, Western Europe 24.2%, other developed markets 5.1% and high-growth markets 28.6%, a group that includes China, Latin America and most of Asia. About 59% of sales went to customers outside the United States, so reported results move with exchange rates. Research and development took about 6.5% of 2025 sales.

How to Buy Danaher Stock
Danaher is a Delaware company with a single listed class of common stock, so no depositary receipt or foreign line enters the picture. The route is the one for any US share:
1. Line up a broker with NYSE access. Outside the United States that may be a local firm linked to US markets or a global broker; confirm which firm holds custody of your shares and which regulator oversees it.
2. Open the account and file the tax form. Individuals who are not US persons generally certify their status on IRS Form W-8BEN, which the broker relies on when it withholds US tax from dividends.
3. Move money in. If your account is not in US dollars, the conversion spread is a cost on top of commission.
4. Search for DHR and read the result line. It should say Danaher Corporation common stock on the NYSE. Lines such as DHR/28 or DHR 30 are the company's notes, which pay interest and carry no ownership.
5. Set the order. Investor.gov, the SEC's site for investors, notes that a market order "guarantees that the order will be executed, but does not guarantee the execution price," while a limit order trades only "at a specific price or better." Knowing how a market order is filled helps when the spread is wide.
6. Choose whole or fractional shares, then submit. A fractional order lets a fixed sum buy part of a share, but the SEC's bulletin on the subject warns: "You generally cannot transfer fractional shares to another brokerage firm." A later change of broker may therefore force a sale.
Dividend tax outside the US. The IRS states that "most types of U.S. source income received by a foreign person are subject to U.S. tax of 30%," and a tax treaty can reduce the rate or remove it. The broker withholds the tax before the cash reaches you, and your country of residence may tax the same dividend again.
Owning DHR inside a fund. A fund replicating the S&P 500 holds Danaher as one constituent among hundreds; State Street's daily holdings file for SPY listed it on 16 October 2026.
What Drives the DHR Share Price
Bioprocessing orders. Biotechnology sells mostly to drugmakers and contract manufacturers producing biologics. Its 2025 sales rose 8.0%, led by consumables bought by large pharmaceutical and CDMO customers, while equipment sales fell. The risk factors describe the opposite swing too: some of Danaher's businesses "have also experienced cyclical dynamics as a result of factors such as inventory de-stocking, high interest rates and depressed funding levels for biotechnology companies."
Research budgets. Life Sciences sales were flat in 2025 and core sales fell 1.5%. The 10-K explains: "Lower funding levels at emerging biotechnology customers and in the academic and government end-markets reduced demand for the segment's products." It also points to US government cuts that include "the cancellation or delay of government contracts and research grants."
China and test pricing. Diagnostics prices fell 1.0% in 2025, a drop the 10-K puts down mainly to "the volume-based procurement program and healthcare reimbursement changes in China." China's government has also issued a series of policies "to promote the development and use of local medical devices." China's share of Danaher's sales fell from 13.2% in 2023 to 10.7% in 2025.
The respiratory season. Demand for molecular diagnostics "is typically heavier in anticipation of and during respiratory season," the filing says, and depends on how severe the flu and COVID-19 season turns out to be. In 2025 lower sales of respiratory tests more than offset growth in other molecular tests.
Deals, debt and goodwill. Masimo was paid for with cash, new debt and commercial paper, and it brought its own disputes, including patent cases against Apple that were still unresolved in mid-2026. Years of acquisitions have left goodwill and other intangible assets at about 73% of total assets at the end of 2025, and impairment charges were the main reason the operating margin slipped from 20.4% to 19.1% that year.
Key Risks for DHR Shareholders
Danaher's risk factors run from cybersecurity to climate. Four headings sit closest to what this page describes:
Spin-off taxes. "We could incur significant liability if our dispositions of any of Fortive Corporation, Envista Holdings Corporation or Veralto Corporation is determined to be a taxable transaction."
Acquisition pace. "Failing to consummate acquisitions at our historical rate and at appropriate prices, and to make appropriate investments that support our long-term strategy, can negatively impact our business."
Impairments. "We may be required to recognize impairment charges for our goodwill and other intangible assets."
Currency. "Foreign currency exchange rates can adversely affect our financial statements."
The share carries two more: one stock ties your money to one company, however many businesses sit inside it, and no dividend is guaranteed — future payments "will be determined by Danaher's Board of Directors and will depend on business conditions, Danaher's earnings and other factors," according to the 10-K.
Checking Danaher's Filings Yourself
Danaher's SEC filings sit under CIK 313616: an annual 10-K, a 10-Q for each quarter and 8-Ks for events in between, such as the Masimo agreement in February 2026. In the 10-K, Item 1 describes the segments, Item 1A the risks, and the revenue and segment notes break sales down by segment, region and country. The investor relations site, investors.danaher.com, collects filings, quarterly earnings and presentations.
Two checks prevent common mistakes. The structured cover of the 2025 10-K, R1.htm, lists nine trading symbols, and only plain DHR is the common stock. And older per-share data must be adjusted for the 2004 and 2010 splits, while older annual reports still include businesses later separated. Frequently Asked Questions About DHR Stock
Does Danaher stock pay dividends?
Yes, a regular quarterly cash dividend. The quarterly rate was raised with the payments made in the second quarter of 2025 and again in the second quarter of 2026. The board decides each payment; the latest declared amount and date appear in the most recent 10-Q or 10-K.
Can I buy Danaher stock with crypto?
There is no direct route. A broker sells you DHR for US dollars, which means converting crypto to cash first and transferring that cash to the brokerage account. Depending on where you live, selling the crypto can be a taxable event. Treat it as two decisions: whether to sell the crypto, and whether to own a registered share of Danaher.
What companies has Danaher spun off?
Three businesses have left in the past decade: Fortive in July 2016, Envista in 2019 through an initial public offering and a December share exchange, and Veralto in September 2023. In 2015 Danaher also split off most of its communications business in a deal with NetScout Systems.
Has Danaher stock ever split?
Yes. Danaher's filings record two-for-one splits paid on 20 May 2004 and 10 June 2010, each issued as a stock dividend. Per-share figures from before those dates need adjusting before you compare them.
What is the Danaher Business System?
DBS is the set of processes and tools Danaher's operating companies use every day for continuous improvement, and the 10-K says it "also represents our culture." It rests on five core values, one of them "Kaizen is our Way of Life," and four pillars: Growth, Lean, Leadership and the DBS Fundamentals.
Conclusion
Once an account is open, buying DHR comes down to picking the common stock line on the NYSE and choosing a market or limit order. Understanding the company takes longer. Today's Danaher is what remains after three separations and a run of purchases from Pall and Cytiva to Abcam and Masimo, with roughly four-fifths of its sales recurring. Bioprocessing orders, research budgets, China and the Masimo integration are tracked in the 10-K, the 10-Qs and the 8-Ks, and the latest of them is the place to start before you size a position in a single life sciences stock.
